In our innocence we may think that testing pet foods is simply a case of giving some samples to local animal shelters to see whether cats or dogs find the food palatable & whether they thrive on the ingredients. Well, this is not necessarily the case....
Did you know the manufacturers of the pet food product IAMS (owned by Proctor & Gamble) deliberately develops illnesses & painful conditions in laboratory kept animals in order to test their products; the likes of mouth ulcers & the painful gum disease gingivitis? After these poor caged animals have served their purposes & been through untold agonies, they are euthanised if they get too ill & if they survive, then another onslaught of experiments will be their future...never knowing human compassion or love. So many of our pets' foods sit on the shelves of our supermarkets having first been tested on animals in dire laboratory facilities. It is worth remembering the meat used is deemed unfit for human consumption...What exactly does that mean? Well, it means it's rotten, full of pesticides & drugs, created from the pieces of bodies from sick farm animals with the addition of vitamins & minerals to "make it healthy"! You've heard the phrase "We are what we eat"....The same applies to your pooch or puss. Thankfully, there are some honourable companies out there whose priority is not lining their pockets or keeping shareholders happy at the expense of species of animals without a voice. Did you know that the famous soup ingredient of SHARK FIN is utterly tasteless? Yet, up to 10 million sharks a year die excruciating deaths as their fins get cut off & are then thrown back into the ocean to bleed to death, drown or be eaten alive by other sea animals, all for the sake of their fin. The fisherman may be paid the princely sum of £3 ($6) for each fin, whilst the restauranter can charge up to £50 ($100) for a bowl of this so-called "delicacy"! The Chinese nation in their desire to be cultured & sophisticate will always have this dish on their wedding reception menu to impress their family & friends...the flavour is actually coming from the common old chicken or fish stock cube!! Did you know that there is a market in China for cat & dog fur? Surprised? Well, it's true, pets within China will be kidnapped, along with huge breeding farms of cats & dogs kept in the most revolting & harrowing of conditions, in order to strip off their skins. If they are lucky they may feel no pain when their skin is removed, as they might be strangled to death first, but the butchers don't really care, they will cut & rip the skin off whilst the animal shrieks & howls in agony, then throw it on a huge pile of a decaying bodies. So what happens to these skins? They are used as fashion detailing on clothing or as furry children's toys or that stuffed sleeping cat ornament, you know the one...it feels so soft. It feels so real!! Or perhaps a pet's toy, a little "furry" mouse. The Chinese in their desire for earning $$$'s will deliberately mislabel the product to fool the buyers as they are exported into the EU & US. They will label it "fake fur". The oceans, or rather, the human impact on the oceans, have changed dramatically over the half-century since whales have been protected. Known environmental threats to whales include global warming, pollution, overfishing, ozone depletion, noise such as sonar weaponry & ship strikes. Industrial fishing threatens the food supply of whales & also puts whales at risk of entanglement in fishing gear.
For years, Japan has been recruiting countries with no obvious interest in whaling to join the IWC & vote in its favour, by using development aid as an incentive. As the number of pro-whaling IWC members grows, the ban on commercial whaling becomes increasingly threatened.
If you’re thinking of eating whale, you might want to think again – the blubber of dead whales in some areas is so highly contaminated with mercury & organochlorines such as PCBs & pesticides that it would be classified as toxic waste!
