An easy way of checking the complementary colour of another is to look at the colour wheel diagram to the lower left, it shows that complementary colours are located directly opposite each other. We can also see there are further colours within the colour wheel, these are called tertiary colours. They are created when we blend a primary colour with a secondary colour e.g. yellow & green creates olive green, blue & green creates turquoise, yellow & orange creates gold, red & orange creates an orange-red (coral), red & violet creates magenta, violet & blue creates indigo.
Using Colour With Intention In Your Life
So, on the previous page, we covered some basic information on what colour therapy is all about in relation to our chakra energy centres with an example shown in the diagram (lower left of page).
There are simple ways in which we can help ourselves more in our daily life by consciously wearing a specific colour. In order for us to attempt this, we need some further information on each colour.

Primary colours are red, yellow & blue.
Secondary Colours are orange, green & violet. They are created by blending two primary colours together in equal parts e.g.
blue & yellow makes green, red & yellow makes orange, blue & red makes violet.
In order to use colour consciously we also need to know what is a complementary colour? Quite simply the complementary colour of a primary colour is the colour that was created by the other two primary colours e.g. red's complementary is green (created by blue & yellow), blue's complementary is orange, (the equal blend of red & yellow) & finally yellow's complementary is violet (the blend of blue & red).
Red - Base Chakra - complementary colour - green
Red represents passion & action...so if we are lacking in energy, red is a useful colour to wear, especially the lower half of our body. If we are overly energised & cannot "switch off" then we need an application of red's complementary colour, green to chill out!
Orange - Sacral Chakra - complementary colour - blue
Orange is known as the colour of joy & wisdom. In the spiritual sense it connects us with our feelings & emotions of joy. It relates to the digestive system & it can stimulate our appetite. It is also a fairly energetic colour, full of the potential of creativity, Wearing its complementary colour of blue will allow us to find a little peace & calm.
Yellow - Solar Plexus Chakra - complementary colour - violet
Yellow is a sunny colour. It can alleviate depression because it connects with our mental self more, so that we can analyse our situation & circumstances with a detached perspective rather than through our feelings & emotions. It's also useful for digestive problems. If we are being too analytical or have feelings of confusion, violet, its complementary colour is useful for connecting with a more spiritual perspective. We can connect with our intuition, our higher self.
Green - Heart Chakra - complementary colour - red
Green has a lovely calming effect & may alleviate anxiety & panic attacks/palpitations. As it connects to our heart, so it enhances the capacity for love. It's also about growth & space. Learning to appreciate the boundaries of
others & setting your own
boundaries. Its complementary colour is useful when you need its fiery energy to be more assertive if
you are at the beck & call of others, learning to say "NO!", but said in love rather than through
aggression.
